Join us in welcoming Senior-level Iyengar instructors Eddy Marks and Mary Obendorfer, owners of the BKS Iyengar Yoga Centers of San Diego.
Mary and Eddy have 59 years of experience between them, they were certified directly by Mr. Iyengar, and they continue their studies by spending two months a year in India. They have expertise in yoga therapy, specifically for the spine and cardiac problems. Mary and Eddy are an energetic and fun loving couple who are known around the nation as teacher trainers. Their workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn asana and pranayama, and be assisted simultaneously.

ANDALUSI DANCE CLASS

Andalusi Dance Class is a combination of Pilates, Belly and Flamenco. Inspired by the dance forms widely practiced in Southern Spain, this class will start with Pilates to warm up the entire body and strengthen the core. Belly Dancing develops the sensual and curvy movements that greatly influence the final component, Flamenco.
Andalusi Dance is designed to give everyone the opportunity to experience the spirit and fire of the union of Arabic and Spanish dance forms while still being gentle to the joints. It is a grounding, chakra energizing and liberating experience that will bring out the gypsy from within!

HAND DRUMMING WORKSHOP
with Sherry Gingras of Drumz in Austin, Texas
Join us for an afternoon of rockin' rhythms on the amazing West African djembe drums! We will explore the magic of hand drumming as a language which allows us to speak from our hearts and liberate our spirits!
For centuries in cultures all around the world, drumming has been a powerful tool for transformation, relaxation and release of stress, connection to spirit, for building strong community bonds, and for simply celebrating the joy of being ALIVE. If you have a heartbeat, you have rhythm!
Come and be a part of a supportive circle and learn the art of conversation through your instrument. We will learn some rhythm fundamentals, djembe hand technique and some rhythm patterns and exercises to develop good hand technique. A West African rhythm with multiple parts, a song or two, drum circle etiquette, how to select a good drum, as well as the opportunity to enjoy creating an 'in the moment' rhythm together at the end as our "closing rhythm". No previous musical experience is necessary.
After the class, join us in drumming for the 4pm Nia class!
Extra drums will be provided for rent for $5 for those who need a drum. Please specify at the time of registration.

INTRODUCTION TO PILATES

This series is based on Joseph Pilates’ 34 mat exercises presented in Return To Life, published in 1945. The class will explore Pilates fundamentals for audible breath, posture and alignment, simple to complex movement and spinal mechanics. The class will have an experience of each exercise.
This workshop is ideal for beginners as well as intermediate to advanced students/instructors seeking to execute the Pilates method with more precision and grace.

Elisa Rodriguez returns to San Antonio for our Free Final Friday event at Five. Following the free class will be a concert by world renowned musician Rajamani and Elisa will perform Flamenco and Middle Eastern Dance!
Oliver Rajamani, born and raised in TamilNadu, India, is a renowned world music artist who is credited for keeping alive: the ancient vanishing Tamil folk music and Culture, and the nomadic and devotional musical styles of India. Music critics have distinguished Rajamani as an "artist who has redefined Gypsy Music by taking it back to India (homeland of the Roma Gypsy) to its original roots" and "literally destroying borders."
Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Elisa Rodriguez moved to Seville, Spain where she lived and studied flamenco for seven years. She toured Canada in 2003, as the guest soloist in the production Spain Meets Canada II, under the direction of Kari Alba. As a belly dancer, Elisa also studied in Seville with Barbara Baretto from Brazil, and has performed in several Moroccan establishments in Spain and in the USA. Elisa continues to incorporate Middle Eastern dance in her own choreography.
Elisa has created the Andalusi Dance Class to promote health through movement. She pioneered her class at The Synergy Studio and continues to teach here.

Calling all Men: An introduction to Nia
Adelle Brewer and Jan Jarboe Russell
This special class is designed to introduce men into the basics of Nia, a body-mind fitness program that focuses on three arts: Martial Arts, Dance Arts, and Healing Arts. This particular workshop will focus on the three forms of martial arts that we express In Nia -- Tai Chi, a relaxed experience of alignment of body weights by moving mindfully, Tae Kwon Do, the explosive dance of precision using strikes, punches, and kicks, and Aikido, the physical awareness of neither fight nor flight but blending.
The practice of martial arts gives us the opportunity to sense what the body naturally knows how to do, but faster and with greater awareness, mindful control and precision.
This class is designed for men who have never taken a Nia class, who have no prior training in the martial arts, but who want an experience of feeling powerful, balanced and grounded.

Finding Your Voice: A Nia Sounding Playshop

Movement is born in stillness. Words are born in silence. Join us for an exploration of the voices of the body as a means to express and experience your own authentic, embodied voice. In every Nia class, we use sound as a means of engaging the core, of letting the bones speak, of intensifying the five sensations -- strength, stability, agility, flexibility and mobility - and of transformation. This workshop is designed to help students find their individual voice and to blend with the voices of the community.
